Two creative pupils at Holy Trinity Primary have designed eye-catching banners to encourage greater road safety around their school.

Primary 7 pupil Alex Hattie is appealing to motorists not to park at the school gates with her banner stating ‘Parking at School Gates is Dangerous and Selfish’.  The message is reinforced with two pictures – one with a car parked on zig-zags and the other speeding.

Carla George-Anne from Primary 4b is encouraging her fellow pupils to cross carefully with her banner displaying happy emojis crossing the road with a road crossing patrol.  Alongside the colourful picture there are the words ‘Stop. Look. Listen. Think’.

Poor driver behaviour through dangerous parking in the vicinity of the school is a growing concern for pupils, teachers and parents alike and cars parked on zig-zags and across pavements makes crossing hazardous for pupils entering and leaving school.

To raise awareness of the problem the school worked with the Council’s Community Safety team to run a poster competition among pupils. Alex and Carla George-Anne’s winning poster designs now feature on ten foot banners on the railings at the Newdyke Road and Langmuir Road entrances of the school.

Carla said, “You need to stop, look, listen and think to keep safe”. And Alex added, “I hope that everyone realises parking on the zigzags is unsafe, dangerous and selfish!”

Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of the Council’s Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee said, “Despite numerous pleas from the school to parents and carers, children’s lives continue to be put at risk due to dangerous parking.  This is a growing problem and understandably everyone is becoming more concerned.

“However, it is great to see the children getting on board to try and tackle the issue and these beautifully designed banners are bound to attract the attention of motorists and encourage everyone to think of safety first at the school gates.  I would urge anyone dropping off or picking up at Holy Trinity Primary and pupils walking to the school to take heed of the warnings.”
