East Dunbartonshire Council played its part to enhance Scotland's links with China as Provost Alan Brown welcomed a group of local Chinese business people to the Council HQ.

Provost Brown met with the group together with Joint Leader of the Council, Andrew Polson to establish cultural, educational and economic links with Beijing in China.

The meeting was attended by Johnny Shek Ah Yee, Honorary Chairman of the Kut O Benevolent Society, a long term resident of Kirkintilloch who opened the first Chinese Restaurant in Kirkintilloch in the 70s; Edward Tsang, Honorary Chairman of Asian Association of Culture, Commerce and Education in Europe, who has lived in Scotland for many years working to promote exchanges between Scotland and China; and Danny Xue, Chairman of the Fujian Youth Association in Scotland.

Provost Brown said, "Deep links have already been forged between China and Scotland and they are keen to build on those by broadening activities out to include areas outwith Glasgow and Edinburgh.

"In East Dunbartonshire we have a well-established Confucius Classroom Secondary Hub in St Ninian’s High, Kirkintilloch and more recently a Confucius Classroom was set up in Clober Primary, Milngavie. Pupils are learning Mandarin and finding out about the Chinese culture, building relationships with their peers in China.

"We had an interesting discussion at our meeting and I am hopeful that we can build on our talks to further enhance cultural, educational and economic relationships."
