Education Scotland has given East Dunbartonshire’s Primary Wellbeing Support Service a glowing report following a visit by inspectors earlier this year.

The service, based in Oxgang Primary School in Kirkintilloch, provides full and part-time places for children with emotional and social difficulties.

During the visit the inspectors talked to parents/carers and the children who attend and worked closely with the head teacher and school employees.  The inspection team found the following strengths:

  • Very positive relationships between children and staff.  This is resulting in children making very good progress, particularly with their social and emotional development.
  • Highly effective individualised support which is helping a significant number of children to return to full-time mainstream education.
  • The family learning programme which supports parents and carers to engage with their child’s learning.  This is resulting in improved wellbeing outcomes for children and their families.
  • A skilled staff team and very effective team leader who work collaboratively with partners to ensure the best outcomes for children.

The report also identified the following areas for improvement:

  • Staff should continue to identify ways to involve children, parents and partners more fully in self-evaluation activities.
  • Staff should continue to develop approaches to assess children’s progress in literacy.

Convener of Education, Councillor Jim Goodall, welcomed the inspection report, he said, “This a well-deserved report which recognises the strengths of the service and reflects the high standard of support delivered by a committed, hard-working team.  It is encouraging that the report has highlighted the extremely effective family learning programme which is making a very positive impact on the children and their families.”

The report showed the following evaluations:

Cllr Goodall continued, “The Primary Wellbeing Support Service is a valuable resource within East Dunbartonshire’s Education Service, successfully addressing disadvantage and raising attainment by supporting children with additional needs to return to full time education in mainstream schools.  I am confident the team will reflect on this very positive report, both on the areas for improvement and also the recognised good practice, and use it to go from strength to strength moving forward.”
