Plans to improve the infrastructure and facilities of three primary schools in East Dunbartonshire are one step closer after approval wasApproved written paper with children hands holding pencils around it granted at Planning Board.

Council took the decision (on Tuesday 26 March) to complete the pre-construction phases for the replacement of Balmuildy Primary School and the refurbishment of Bearsden and Milngavie primaries. Planning Board on Thursday 28 March granted approval for the works.

Once the projects have completed the pre-construction phase, anticipated build costs will be reported to Council for further consideration.

The following was approved subject to future Council consideration of project affordability:

  • Balmuildy Primary School - replacement Primary School and Early Years Centre. This will include the creation of a vehicle drop-off and pick-up area, a separate staff and visitor car park, a new MUGA pitch, a dedicated early years playground, and cycle shelters.
  • Bearsden Primary School –refurbishment and extension of the school including the creation of a new entrance, replacing all windows, improvements to the roof, repairs to all relevant doors and external stonework, and new garden space.
  • Milngavie Primary School –refurbishment and extension of the school which will include replacement windows and rooflights, landscaping and changes to playground areas.

Council Leader Gordan Low said, “Due to the continuing challenging borrowing situation, aligned with current exorbitant build costs, all Capital projects included in our Programme for 2024/2025 will be subject to future funding decisions in order to advance beyond the pre-construction phase.

“I am pleased that we can now look to conclude the pre-construction phase for the Balmuildy, Bearsden and Milngavie primary school projects before they are then brought back to Council for review.”
