There are nine opportunities within East Dunbartonshire Council for Modern Apprentices looking to kick start their careers in local government.

The recruitment drive demonstrates the Council’s continued commitment to its Modern Apprenticeship Programme and these new recruits will bring the total number of local young people employed over the last six years to over 50.

Open to East Dunbartonshire residents, aged 16-24years, this year’s apprenticeships are in the following service areas:

  • Early Years (supporting child development in nurseries)                     4 places
  • Streetscene (grounds maintenance, care of gardens/cemeteries)      3 places
  • Roads & Civils(roads and street lighting maintenance)                        2 places

Joint Council Leader Andrew Polson said, “These Council apprenticeships offer young people a route into the world of work that has proved very attractive in the past. For increasing numbers of young people the idea of learning on the job while continuing to study and being paid is the path they want to pursue.

“Throughout their time with us, Council apprentices are supported by experienced and professional colleagues to develop their skills and gather the experience they need to launch a successful career in their chosen field. I’m delighted that for the sixth year in a row, the Council is creating these opportunities.”

Joint Council Leader Vaughan Moody added, “The Council’s Modern Apprenticeship programme is hugely successful with many of the young people remaining with the Council in permanent posts. By recruiting the most promising candidates and investing in their development, the Council is able to benefit from the energy, enthusiasm and knowledge they bring to the workforce.

“While with the Council, several of our apprentices have won Scottish and UK-wide recognition at various Apprentice of the Year awards. This is down to their commitment, the quality of the programme and the support they receive from colleagues. I’d encourage any young person to consider an apprenticeship.”

Plumbing apprentice Declan Miller, now in the fourth year of his apprenticeship with the Council, is one of its rising stars, scooping an Award for Excellence at the Glasgow Kelvin College Learning and Celebration Awards recently.

He said, “My apprenticeship at East Dunbartonshire Council has been a great opportunity to learn on the job with experienced mentors whilst also gaining qualifications. I would recommend an apprenticeship to any school leaver who is considering it. It has been one of the best decisions I have made.”

The apprenticeships are on www.myjobscotland.gov.uk now and the closing date for applications is Thursday 31 May 2018.
