New project puts art at the heart of Lenzie

A unique scheme is aiming to temporarily put art at the heart of the community in Lenzie.

'Inside Lane' - an ArtWalk Project - involves a range of works to enhance public spaces, encourage people to get active and to share their experiences online.

Work takes place from today (Friday 5 May) on the scheme, which complements the ongoing Lenzie Street Design Project.

The initiative brings together a collection of artists’ installations, writings, photography and conversations from 6 May to 30 June 2017.

You can find out more at a pop-up public event on Saturday 20 May, between 1pm and 4pm, on Kirkintilloch Road (outside Billington's).

The Council has joined forces with ArtWalk Projects, Sustrans Scotland, ScotRail Alliance, Friends of Lenzie Moss and the community on 'Inside Lane', which includes:

  • ‘Common Ground' urban game (by Deirdre Macleod) - involving paintings being placed in clusters to 'join up' different types of spaces. There will be 50 small aluminium paintings dotted around the area, with members of the public encouraged to get out and about, take photos and engage on social media. The hashtag is  #commongroundlenzie
  • Colours of Lenzie (by Rosy Naylor) - the roof of the cycle shelter at Lenzie Station will become a canvas, featuring four colours of semi-permanent film
  • Tree Orbs (by Nathalie Holbrook) - a series of works will be created from collected materials - such as willow, bark and twigs – to form large ball-like structures in birch woodland areas
  • City of Play - chalk-based artworks on walkways in and around the station.

In addition, the project will include railway posters with photography from around Lenzie Moss, bookmarks for the ‘Common Ground’ project in local shops and library, and an event newspaper.

Thomas Glen, the Council's Depute Chief Executive for Place, Neighbourhood and Corporate Assets, said, "The Art Walk Project will involve a bright, colourful collection of works being created and installed - temporarily - in and around Lenzie. I hope as many people as possible get involved.

"The Common Ground Urban Game in particular promises to be great fun for all the family, with 50 panels forming an unusual art 'treasure hunt'. Local residents will be encouraged to take part by walking around Lenzie and spotting the small painted boards. Panels will be installed in areas safe for walkers - including footpaths, pedestrian zones and wooded areas.

"The project shows the strength of partnership working, with a range of organisations and individuals involved."

Rosy Naylor, founder and producer at ArtWalk Projects, added, "We’re delighted to be working with the Council and Sustrans Scotland on Inside Lane - an art-engagement project taking place in the public spaces of Lenzie."
