New parking charges and arrangements

Date:
Wednesday, 30 May, 2018

New parking charges and arrangements will come into effect for a number of Council car parks from Monday 18 June 2018.

The new charges are applicable Monday-Saturday, 9am-5.30pm:

  • 0-2 hours - £1
  • 2-3 hours - £2
  • 3-4 hours - £3
  • Over 4 hours - £5

Sundays remain free all day.

Any additional funds raised will be ring-fenced for roads and transportation. The Council recently approved a Revenue Budget for 2018/19 – which included required savings of £13.6 million (£15.8 million prior to the agreed Council Tax rise).

Blue badge holders properly displaying a valid badge currently do not have to obtain pay & display tickets in Council car parks and that will remain the case.

Charges were introduced in seven East Dunbartonshire Council car parks in July 2016: Roman Road (Bearsden); Barleybank and William Patrick Library (Kirkintilloch); and Douglas Street, Mugdock Road, Stewart Street North and Woodburn Way (Milngavie).

The average daily turnover of spaces in charge-levying car parks has increased as a result – providing more parking for potential customers and visitors.

The new parking arrangements mean drivers will no longer have to enter their vehicle registration details when obtaining a ticket.

Joint Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, Councillor Vaughan Moody, said, “The introduction of any new charges and price rises is never taken lightly. However, in order to pay for parking enforcement – and with the revenue budget under such severe, ongoing pressure – it is necessary to revise parking charges.

“Rest assured, any net income from parking charges will be invested in local roads and transport infrastructure.”

Joint Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, Councillor Andrew Polson, said, “Officers will be monitoring the new arrangements for issues such as displacement of parking into surrounding streets.

“The new system will also address ongoing issues around the entering of vehicle registration details. This has generated a considerable amount of feedback from drivers since it was introduced – tying up Council resources and causing frustration among drivers.”

Car parks where charging has been introduced have shown significant improvements in turnover of spaces and customer access to town centres, and it is hoped the new charging arrangements will support that trend.

Appropriate signage will be put in place in advance and leaflets are available in Council buildings.
