Senior elected members and officials from East Dunbartonshire Council are due to meet with Scottish Canals and Transport Scotland to discuss Forth & Clyde Canal bridge issues.

Councillors unanimously backed a recent motion calling for a meeting to clarify the impact of canal closures at Twechar and Bonnybridge on East Dunbartonshire.

The meeting is due to be held on 22 June 2018. Neighbouring local authorities have also been invited to attend.

Joint Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Polson, said, “The Millennium Link project – which saw the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals reopened and rejuvenated – involved significant investment across Scotland and it’s essential that the legacy is not tarnished due to bridge issues.

“The Forth & Clyde Canal is a key attraction in East Dunbartonshire. As well as Kirkintilloch Canal Festival, which attracts thousands to the area every August, the Forth & Clyde is a popular resource for local people, businesses and visitors – including those travelling by boat – and we must ensure it can be used to its full capacity.”

Joint Council Leader, Councillor Vaughan Moody, said, “I look forward to meeting Scottish Canals and Transport Scotland to discuss ongoing issues with canal bridges at Bonnybridge and Twechar.

“The canal is one of East Dunbartonshire's most stunning natural assets, and it’s vital that we work together to ensure it is a useable, accessible and attractive resource for all. An update will be provided to elected members following the meeting."
