Make sure you can have your say at the General Election

Date:
Wednesday, 17 May, 2017

The dust has barely settled on the recent Council elections but already voters are being asked to prepare to go to the polls – this time to take part in the General Election on Thursday 8 June 2017.

So, if you aren’t registered to vote and weren’t able to have your say on 4 May then there is still time to make sure you can take part on 8 June.

The deadline for registering to vote in the General Election is Monday 22 May, however would-be voters are being urged to act NOW to ensure they don't miss out. You can register online - visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote for more information.

Residents of East Dunbartonshire who are aged 18 or above on 8 June 2017 will vote in one of two constituencies depending on where they live:

  • East Dunbartonshire (including Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie and part of Kirkintilloch)
  • Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East (including Lennoxtown, Milton of Campsie, Twechar and the eastern part of Kirkintilloch).

Council Chief Executive Gerry Cornes is the Returning Officer for East Dunbartonshire. He said, "If you are eligible to vote then this is the time to make sure you are registered to ensure that you can take part in the election next month. Please act now to avoid disappointment nearer the time. It is worth remembering that for this poll 16 and 17 year olds are not eligible to vote.”

If you are not sure if you are registered to vote and would like to check, you can contact the Electoral Registration Officer for East Dunbartonshire by calling 0800 980 0471 or e-mailing Ero-edc@dab-vjb.gov.uk You can also write to Dunbartonshire and Argyll & Bute VJB, 235 Dumbarton Road, Clydebank, G81 4XJ.

Once registered there are options about how you cast your vote:

  • If you do not think you can make it along to a polling place on 8 June or if you would simply prefer to cast your vote by post in advance then you must apply for a postal vote. The deadline for this is Tuesday 23 May at 5pm. You can find out more and download and application form at www.yourvotematters.co.uk
  • If you would like to nominate someone else to place your vote for you then you must apply for a proxy vote. The deadline for this is Wednesday 31 May at 5pm. You can find out more and download and application form at www.yourvotematters.co.uk
