East Dunbartonshire Council has been awarded formal accreditation as a Living Wage Employer.  It was one of the first Scottish local authorities to consolidate the Living Wage within its Grading and Pay structures and future proofed the Grading and Pay structure in its most recent revision, to ensure it was sustainable for any future rises.

Council Leader Gordan Low was pleased that this accreditation could be reported to Council.  He said, “Our workforce is our greatest asset, delivering invaluable services to our residents across so many important areas of their lives.  The Council remains absolutely committed to the Living Wage and this formal accreditation reinforces that commitment.

“The Living Wage commitment carries through our procurement processes to contractors and suppliers to the Council.  This external recognition of our Living Wage credentials helps us to lead by example and encourage all employers throughout East Dunbartonshire to also adopt the Living Wage.”

The Living Wage is a term used to describe the minimum hourly wage needed to provide an acceptable standard of living for an individual and their family.  The rate is independently set by the Living Wage Foundation and the current rate is £8.45 per hour.

Accreditation in Scotland is awarded by the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative which is hosted by The Poverty Alliance, working together with the Living Wage Foundation and funded by the Scottish Government.
