Let’s talk about our draft Gaelic Language Plan

Date:
Monday, 23 April, 2018

The Council has produced its second draft Gaelic Language Plan – aiming to raise the profile of the language – and local people are encouraged to comment on it.

An online consultation was launched today (Monday 23 April 2018) and anyone who would like to read the draft plan and have their say on it, can do so until Monday 4 June 2018.

The Council’s Joint Leaders, Councillor Vaughan Moody and Councillor Andrew Polson, are urging local people to take a look at the draft plan and inviting anyone with an interest in the subject to have their say.

Councillor Moody said, “Our vision is to see an increase in the number of people speaking, using and learning Gaelic in East Dunbartonshire in a growing number of everyday situations. We are committed to increasing the learning of Gaelic and since the publication of our first Plan there has been greater uptake of Gaelic Medium Education at Meadowburn Primary and a Principle Teacher of Gaelic has been appointed at Bishopbriggs Academy. We hope to build on this progress.”

Increasing the use of Gaelic is also part of the plan and Councillor Polson explained, “As well as what is happening in these schools we are seeing a growing number of Gaelic related services and groups in the area. Sradagan, a Gaelic youth club for children aged 5-11 years and Rionnagan Beaga, a Gaelic Toddler Group are examples of the kind of groups we aim to support over coming years. Supporting young people within families who wish to speak Gaelic is an important way of helping to sustain its development.”
