Local people are being asked to help shape design proposals for public realm improvements on the north side of Lenzie Station. The first consultation event was a success

The aim is to make the area a better place for people to visit, spend time in and travel through.

East Dunbartonshire Council and Sustrans Scotland held a launch event for the Lenzie Street Design Project on 27 September 2016. More than 100 people took part, with a range of comments, ideas and suggestions received.

In addition, the online engagement tool, Commonplace, had more than 1,000 views and over 200 individual comments on how the area could be improved.

Now a second public event is being held at Lenzie Old Parish Church on Wednesday 30 November 2016:

·         Drop-in anytime between 3.30pm-5pm to meet the team and view feedback received at - and since - the launch event

·         Design workshop from 6.45pm-9pm to pull together and develop design ideas using model kits - prompt 7pm start. No design experience is required for the workshop, just ideas and enthusiasm.

A separate engagement event is being held with representatives of people with physical and/or sensory impairments.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said, "We hope as many local residents, businesses and groups as possible can drop in for a chat about comments and suggestions which have been received, as well as potential ways forward.

"We were delighted with attendance and engagement at the launch event, which proved very useful.

"This project will see Lenzie village centre improved, but there are no firm proposals at the moment - it will all be inspired and led by comments and feedback."

Paul Ruffles, Street Design Co-ordinator, Sustrans Scotland, said, "Thank you to everyone who attended the project launch event and shared their views through Commonplace.

"We have been delighted with the high levels of participation so far and would encourage as many people as possible to come along to either our drop-in session or design workshop on Wednesday 30 November.

"There is still plenty of time to tell us what improvements you would like to see in Lenzie and influence the design process."

The Lenzie Street Design Project has the following aims:

  • Enhance public realm in the village centre and improve passenger/transfer facilities between bus, rail, bike and on foot
  • Make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to travel on foot and by bike to local facilities in the area
  • Redesign public spaces so they feel safer and more attractive places to spend time in or travel through.

East Dunbartonshire Council's Transport Team has partnered with Sustrans Scotland on the initiative. Developer contributions to the Council from housebuilding in the local area will be used to meet construction costs in 2017-2018.

You can find out more about the project by visiting the consultation website - https://lenzie.commonplace.is

The initial consultation ended on 1 November, but the website remains open as a place to find out about future events and opportunities to get directly involved in the design process.

Further workshops are due to be held in the New Year and spring 2017 to develop and showcase ideas. The ambition is to trial agreed design proposals in April or May 2017.
