Leap into action at Family Fun Day

An energetic afternoon of fun is being held to celebrate the opening of the Wester Way – a new active travel corridor running alongside Phase 4 of Bishopbriggs Relief Road.

The event is being held on Sunday 16 September – noon-3pm – on ground opposite Bishopbriggs Academy.

Attractions will include scooters, smoothie bike, walk the dog, water zorbs, giant inflatable, bike skills track, walking football, Dr Bike, Professor Balance and face painting.

Kintessack Place will be closed to allow access between Bishopbriggs Academy and Wester Way, and to give the community an opportunity to join together.

The Council-organised event will raise awareness of Wester Way, which was created using funding from the Scottish Government, through Sustrans Scotland’s Community Links programme.

Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of Place, Neighbourhood and Corporate Assets, said, “I hope as many people as possible can come along to the fun day on Sunday 16 September and celebrate the opening of the Wester Way.

“As this is an active travel event and a residential area, organisers are strongly encouraging as many people as possible to walk or cycle. Hopefully the weather will be kind and families can enjoy a lovely afternoon in the park.”

Council officers previously called on primary school pupils in Bishopbriggs to create designs and suggest a name for the new route.

Two pupils drew gateway signs for the new pedestrian/cycle path, while a third came up with the name – Wester Way:

  • Abi Lee – formerly of St Helen's Primary (design) – now of Turnbull High
  • Lauren Smith – formerly of Meadowburn Primary (design) – now of Bishopbriggs Academy
  • Miriam Cody – formerly of Woodhill Primary (name) – now of Balmuildy Primary.

Dave Keane, Community Links Manager with Sustrans Scotland said, “The Wester Way has been all about bringing the community together to make it easier for people to walk and cycle. This event is a fantastic way to celebrate its completion.”

Kintessack Place, Bishopbriggs will be closed from its junction with Solway Road between 11am and 4pm as part of the fun day on Sunday 16 September. In addition, Spynie Place will be closed between its junctions with Kintessack Place and Monymusk Gardens (which will also be closed).
