Kids keen to keep air clean at Kirkintilloch Canal Festival

Pupils and adults holding posterTwo creative pupils at Lairdsland Primary School have been using their artistic skills to encourage Canal Festival visitors not to smoke during the festivities on Gala Sunday. 

Freyja Spence and Catriona Davie (P7) have designed an eye-catching banner depicting families enjoying some of the wonderful activities on offer at the festival – with the sun shining and the air clean and fresh.  Joint winners of a competition held in local schools, their design was selected from a number of fantastic entries and will be displayed throughout Kirkintilloch during the festival. 

Two Girls holding placadeCouncillor Susan Murray, East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership Board Member and Caroline Sinclair, Head of Mental Health, Learning Disability, Addiction and Health Improvement Services met with Catriona and Freyja to present them with certificates and congratulate them on coming first place in the competition. 

Councillor Murray said, “The girls clearly put a lot of work into this superb banner, it’s really impressive.  The banners will be visible across the area and I am sure they will encourage smokers to think twice about lighting up in this family friendly environment.” 

Caroline Sinclair agreed, she said, “It has been great to work with our partners at the Canal Festival to promote healthier lifestyle choices and a smoke-free environment that everyone can enjoy.
