Join the Active Travel journey and help guide the way forward

Date:
Tuesday, 11 May, 2021

People are being offered the chance to put their ideas in motion as part of the Active Travel Discussion - taking place between 11 May and 28 September 2021.

To help more local residents benefit from keeping active as part of everyday journeys and exercise, the Council is preparing to draft a new Active Travel Strategy for East Dunbartonshire.

We want to hear your views on the local travel network and potential improvements.

Active travel is making journeys by physically-active means - such as walking, cycling or wheeling (including travel by wheelchair).

The first block of online discussion meetings are being held in May/June and there's an interactive map on our website for people to have a say and add ideas

You can also get involved by sending us a photo of your favourite part of the local walking, cycling and wheeling network. Tell us what you like about it – as well as any potential improvements which could be made. Snap to it, if you can!

Use - and look out for - #WalkCycleWheelED on social media to join the Active Travel Discussion.

Councillor Vaughan Moody, Joint Leader of the Council, said, "We're preparing to start work on a new Draft Active Travel Strategy for East Dunbartonshire so it's vital that we engage with as many local residents, communities, groups, businesses and visitors as possible to ensure we're going in the right direction. Please get involved if possible."

Councillor Andrew Polson, Joint Leader of the Council, added, "Active travel is a priority for the Council, offering benefits for health and wellbeing, as well as the environment. It also enhances the area's status as a visitor destination, with opportunities for local businesses and the economy. The new strategy will lay out a number of aims which we will strive to source funding for and deliver."

Suggestions will be considered to gauge how deliverable/feasible they would be - balanced against how well they fit with delivering the objectives of the Local Transport Strategy 2020-2025.

These will add to ideas already gathered through previous Council consultations on transport. An assessment will also be carried out of all existing routes and paths.

A draft Active Travel Strategy, including an action plan, will be produced by the Council once all the evidence and views have been considered. A further period of consultation will then be held prior to the final strategy and action plan moving forward to the delivery stage.
