Holy Family pupils with CouncillorsIt was smiles all round at Holy Family Primary in Lenzie this week as pupils and staff settled back into their Boghead Road building after a 17 month decant.

In August 2015 they moved into the former Lairdsland Primary School building in Kirkintilloch to allow for essential structural repairs to be carried out to the Boghead Road building.

They returned ‘home’ last week following the mid-term break.

A £2m programme of extensive structural repairs was carried out at the school alongside significant refurbishment work throughout the whole building.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie visited the school to meet pupils and staff and to see the completed work. She said, “I would like to thank pupils, parents and staff for their support and co-operation during the decant period.

“The extent of the essential works was such that to ensure everyone’s safety and to get the work done as quickly as possible, a decant was the only option. That said, I do not underestimate the impact it had on the lives of the families involved.”

Head teacher at Holy Family Primary, Frances O’Connell, is delighted to be back in Lenzie and said, “The children coped brilliantly during their time in the other building and settled in there very quickly. However there’s no place like home and we are all thrilled to be back.

“It is clear how much work has been carried out while we have been away. The place has been transformed and feels like a new school.

Holy Family pupils with teachers“I want to thank parents and carers for their support over the last year and a half as they have helped to ensure that school life went on as normal and pupils continued to thrive. Finally I want to thank the residents of Kerr Street as well as workers and management of Tesco for their assistance while we were in the old Lairdsland Primary building.”

Parent Council Chair, Samantha MacLean, said, “By working closely with the children, school staff and the Parent Council, East Dunbartonshire Council has ensured that the internal building is safe, up to date, bright and welcoming. We would like to say thanks to all involved for their support in getting our children home to a wonderful environment."

Councillor Geekie paid tribute to the Council teams who worked with the school to help make both moves go smoothly.

She said, “It is a massive job to co-ordinate a project of this scale but thanks to the hard work and professionalism of our teams, the children are settled comfortably back into their routine.”
