Community groups across East Dunbartonshire will play their part in the Glasgow 2018 European Championships after securing grants to hold cultural events.

Applications were invited earlier this year for the Festival 2018 Our Place Fund – with a total of £15,000 available in East Dunbartonshire.

Glasgow and Berlin are hosting the European Championships in 2018 – featuring athletics, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, triathlon and team golf.

Festival 2018 is the cultural programme and a range of inspiring events will take place locally in July and August – organised by East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust.

Successful projects – chosen after voting took place online – will include sports, song & dance, storytelling, arts & crafts, filming, art, wellbeing workshops, pop-up play sessions, food, flowers, live music, reading and more.

Locations include Auchinairn, Bearsden, Kirkintilloch, Milngavie, Milton of Campsie, Twechar and Waterside.

Joint East Dunbartonshire Council Leader, Councillor Vaughan Moody, said, "A total of 28 community organisations applied to hold events and projects as part of the Festival 2018 Your Community Fund.

“I am pleased that so many groups seized this golden opportunity to showcase the great community spirit which exists within East Dunbartonshire – tying in with the festival of sport taking place in Glasgow and Berlin.”

Joint Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Polson, said, "The Glasgow 2018 European Championships will be a celebration of inspiration and achievement.

“I am delighted that as well as helping to host the Cycling Time Trial on 8 August, East Dunbartonshire will offer an exciting range of cultural and sporting events in our local communities.”

Glasgow 2018 Championships Director Colin Hartley said, “Glasgow 2018 promises to be one of the most exciting sporting and cultural events ever experienced in Scotland and there will be something for everybody to enjoy.

“We want as many people as possible to be part of this historic event – the first-ever of its kind – and this funding gives local communities the chance to create their own special moments during the Championships.”

The Glasgow 2018 Cycling Time Trial will pass through East Dunbartonshire on 8 August – offering people a unique chance to see elite sports stars in their communities. There will be a number of road closures as a result. Awareness events were held earlier this year and more will be arranged during June and July, with a letter also being issued to affected properties.
