Great time to learn more about local heritage

People are being urged to explore the fascinating history of East image of people wood carvingDunbartonshire as Scotland prepares to celebrate its first-ever Heritage Awareness Day on Friday 6 October.

East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust offers a wealth of resources, facilities, events and services locally, including:

  • Archive services at Kirkintilloch's William Patrick Library, Bearsden Library and online
  • Heritage and arts displays at the Auld Kirk Museum, Kirkintilloch, and Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie
  • Family history and local history services
  • The newly-reopened and extended Kilmardinny House
  • Trails and Tales - a local arts and heritage learning programme which engages artists with communities - supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Creative Scotland. The project is creating a series of heritage sculpture trails across East Dunbartonshire which will launch in the new year.
  • Made in Kirkintilloch - a community engagement programme which explores Kirkintilloch’s rich industrial heritage through creative activities and a series of co-curated exhibitions with local groups and individuals. An industrial heritage centre will be created on the upper floor of the newly-restored and extended Kirkintilloch Town Hall - also supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
  • Open Archives - a free drop-in family event being held in Bearsden Community Hub (Lesser Hall) on Tuesday 10 October, 2.30-5.30pm. On display will be unique drawings, building plans, manuscripts, letters and photographs relating to the Bearsden and Milngavie area. There will also be a children’s treasure hunt with prizes.
  • Beginning Family History course - being held on Tuesdays between 7 November and 5 December at William Patrick Library - which will introduce participants to family history research, provide coverage of basic sources needed to build your family tree and explain how you can look further into the lives of your ancestors.
