Modern Apprentices at cancal basinKeeping up its tradition of recruiting local young people onto its award-winning Modern Apprenticeship Scheme, East Dunbartonshire Council has just welcomed 11 new starts.

The recruits were chosen from a pool of more than 100 candidates to take up roles in Early Years (6 posts), Streetscene Environmental (3 posts) and Roads & Civils (2 posts). They come from Bishopbriggs, Lennoxtown, Milngavie and Twechar

The latest Modern Apprentices joined the Council in August and were welcomed by Joint Leader Councillor Andrew Polson.

He said, “I am delighted to welcome our new Apprentices onto a scheme that I know will open up excellent learning opportunities for them over the next two years. The Programme has been running since 2013 and since then the Council has employed 56 Modern Apprentices across a number of different service areas.

“Offering training, work experience and a wage, the Programme is always very popular with young people who are seeking an exciting and interesting route into the world of work. It has been hugely successful over the years with many young people being recognised at national awards for their achievements.”

Holly Anderson, 17 from Milngavie said, “I feel extremely proud of myself and have a real sense of self accomplishment for getting an apprenticeship with East Dunbartonshire Council. I have
already been working at my nursery placement and have been enjoying every day there. And I look forward to starting college and working on getting my qualifications.”

Jason Dickie, 20, from Twechar added, “I’ve always wanted an apprenticeship and was really chuffed to get this opportunity working with the Roads Team in East Dunbartonshire. I have already started college and I'm looking forward to getting out with the team and learning the trade on the job.”

Local employers interested in finding out more about starting a Modern Apprenticeship Programme or other employability scheme can contact the Council’s Skills for Learning, Life & Work Team on 0300 123 4510 for information, professional advice and support.

Councillor Polson concluded by saying, “I’d like to offer our new Apprentices a very warm welcome to the Council and wish them every success as they develop their careers in the profession of their choice. I will watch their progress with interest.”
