We all know teachers who go the extra mile but Mr Sewell from Merkland School in Kirkintilloch went 25 miles - round an extreme obstacle course, through mud, in the dark –and raised £1,900 for school funds in the process.

Mr Sewell is a Support for Learning Assistant at the East Dunbartonshire school for children with additional support needs and decided to do his bit to help buy a new mini-bus for the children’s trips and activities.

He took part in Europe’s Toughest Mudder in Nottingham last month - an eight hour endurance race starting at midnight and including ice swimming, a muddy course and some electric obstacles – shocking!

Super Sewel – as he’s now known – completed five laps of the course, racking up a total of 25 miles. Thanks to sponsorship from friends, family, colleagues and local businesses* he raised just shy of £2,000 and is delighted.

Running in a wet suit through the night is pretty tiring but I was so thrilled to finish and raise so much money for the school. The children had a good laugh at my photos.”

Headteacher Kay Hunter added, “This is a wonderful amount of money and David worked hard for every penny. We have a great team at Merkland School and while we weren’t on that muddy course we were whole heartedly supporting him from a distance.”
