Final phase of works will begin in January

Improvement works in Kirkintilloch town centre will enter their final phase in the New Year.

Cowgate will be closed from its Catherine Street junction on 9 January 2017 to allow the last tranche of works to take place.

Activity will take place around the area of Kirkintilloch Community Hub and William Patrick Library, with West High Street also closed to through traffic.

All four arms of the Catherine Street/Kerr Street junction are currently open to help people access the town centre, shops and hostelries during the peak festive period.

Vehicles are now able to move freely through the junctions - giving way as appropriate and being mindful of pedestrians crossing.

Completed phases of the Cowgate Street Design Project - which is part of the overall Kirkintilloch Masterplan - include:

  • New-look road and pavements between Townhead Bridge and Catherine Street
  • Remodelled junctions at Catherine Street, Kerr Street and Cowgate
  • New-look road and pavements in Cowgate.

Councillor Rhondda Geekie, Leader of the Council, said, "As we enter 2017, we are very much entering the home straight as far as the Cowgate Street Design Project is concerned.

"I am delighted we were able to work with our contractor to ensure Cowgate was reopened during the busy Christmas period.

"There have been concerns expressed as regards the Catherine Street junction. Rest assured, we are monitoring the area and early indications suggest that it is operating as planned.

"I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while these works take place.

"The aim of this project - and indeed Kirkintilloch Masterplan - is to make the town centre a more desirable place to live, visit and work in.

"I would ask people to bear with us as we enter the final phase of works on 9 January 2017, with the project on track to be completed before the summer."

Works are taking place to lower vehicle speeds, remove street clutter, widen pavements and narrow roads. In addition, gateway features will be created - enhancing the town - as well as public realm improvements featuring artwork by members of the public.

A 20mph speed limit has been introduced to slow down traffic and there are new controlled crossings.

Kirkintilloch Masterplan - which is supported by a range of external funds - includes the rejuvenation of the historic Kirkintilloch Town Hall.
