Festival of Celebration: Autism and Mental Health

An inspirational festival celebrating the artistic achievements of people with autism, learning disabilities and mental health issues – and the organisations which support them – has been declared a great success.

A sensational 76 performers and 13 artists were involved in Festival of Celebration, which tied in with Autism Awareness Week 2018.

More than 250 people attended between 22-24 March – enjoying discussions, art exhibitions, live music, workshops, presentations and feedback sessions – recognising the importance of art and music in health and wellbeing.

Classes at Merkland School also submitted work and the school choir performed a rousing version of The Proclaimers’ classic ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’.

Events were held at the Lillie Art Gallery and Kirkintilloch Town Hall, including:

  • Exhibitions of artwork by people of all ages
  • Performances and workshops from Indepen-dance, Rookie Rockstars and Sounds of the Gallery band
  • Talks by Brothers in Arms, GRACE, Dekko Comics, Limelight Music and Creative Sparks Theatre Arts
  • Performances by Kelvinbank Drama Group and Limelight Music Band
  • Information stands from a number of local organisations.

Susan Manion, Chief Officer of East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), said, “Congratulations and thanks to everyone who made the Festival of Celebration such a success – from the organisers who worked so hard behind the scenes to the contributors, performers and everyone who came along to show their support.

“The aim of the festival was to champion the achievements of people with autism, learning disabilities and mental health issues - and the organisations that support them.

“The event was an inspirational success - building upon strong work in the communities of East Dunbartonshire.”

* The East Dunbartonshire Autism Strategy 2014- 2024 sets out commitments made by the Council, NHS and local voluntary sector to improve the lives of people with autism and their families in East Dunbartonshire.
