Families cycled at the speed of light as part of a special event to inspire more people to get active - whatever their age or experience on two wheels.

Pedal power lit up the winter night around Kirkintilloch as 24 people took part in the Ride of the Speed of Light event - organised by Sustrans and East Dunbartonshire Council.

Cyclists aged eight upwards enjoyed a safe night-time cycle using Catherine's Way and other quite side roads.

Families festooned their bikes with fairy lights and there was even a classical music soundtrack - attracting curious residents out to watch the procession on Saturday evening (25 February).

It follows a similar event in Bearsden and will be followed by another special cycle in Bishopbriggs.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said, "Well done to everyone who took part in this great event in and around Kirkintilloch.

"Innovative ideas like this help to shed light on the fun and excitement to be had while enjoying active travel.

"The Council is working hard with organisations such as Sustrans to encourage people to travel more sustainably and this is another great example of partnership working."

The event complements the Council's Active Travel Strategy - which promotes projects making it easier to walk and cycle, as well as encouraging the use of public transport.

Donald Macdonald, Sustrans Scotland Cycling Officer for East Dunbartonshire, said, "It was a tremendous atmosphere. People came out of their houses to wave at us and everyone had a really great time.

"A big thank-you to all the Kirkintilloch and Lenzie families who came along and entered into the spirit of the event. We were on hand to give out fairy lights to anyone who wanted to decorate their bikes."
