Having fun and spreading the word about Fair Trade was child's play for a group of energetic youngsters.group of children

A special Fair Games event was held recently at St Mary’s Nursery, Kirkintilloch - with dozens of children from all over East Dunbartonshire involved.

The aspiring athletes got to take part in a range of activities - including fun with a giant Fairtrade football, sports balls (including mini rugby), agility course, bean bags (filled with Fair Trade rice), 'bricklaying', colouring-in, storytelling and more.

There were also Fairtrade snacks and refreshments to enjoy.

The event was organised to celebrate the ongoing success of the Fair Trade Nurseries programme in East Dunbartonshire and to mark this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.

Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, helped to award medals at the end of the Games.

She said, "This was an inspirational day and a fantastic celebration of all things Fair Trade. It was great to see so many enthusiastic faces and their energy was infectious.

"The Fair Games were also a timely celebration of the Fair Trade Nurseries programme in East Dunbartonshire, which continues to go from strength to strength."

Organiser and Fair Trade campaigner Tracy Mitchell added, "Children were given the chance to share and develop their knowledge, skills and experience via a series of Fair Games and associated activities. It was also an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved locally.group of children

"Thank you to everyone who took the time to come along - from the young athletes to the many helpers and supporters."

In particular, organisers would like to thank Scottish Fair Trade Forum for supporting the event and Bala Sport for providing the large sports football.

* The Council works closely with East Dunbartonshire Fair Trade Steering Group, as well as Fairtrade Town groups in Lenzie, Bearsden and Milngavie.

It also works with enterprises such as Gavin's Mill shop and café in Milngavie and Silver Birch in Milton of Campsie, as well as church groups.

The Council passed a resolution in November 2016 supporting Fair Trade locally - including a pledge to use such goods wherever possible when catering for meetings and functions.group of children

It was recently announced that East Dunbartonshire has once again successfully renewed its Fairtrade Zone status - which it has held now since 2007.
