The final external works around St Nicholas’ Primary School in Bearsden are now complete and pupils are enjoying the fantastic outdoor space.
The new £10m school – built on the site of St Andrew’s Primary to replace it and St Joseph’s Primary – opened its doors to pupils in August 2018.
Since then the old St Andrew’s Primary School building has been demolished, the landscaping completed and the 378 pupils who attend St Nicholas’ are making good use of their outdoor space.
Joint Council Leader, Andrew Polson, said, “St Nicholas’ Primary School is now fully complete, with a cleverly designed playground which enhances the modern, fit-for-purpose school building. Despite the cold weather, the children are thoroughly enjoying getting outside and making great use of the facilities on offer."
The school’s landscape design gives pupils space to play, learn and take part in sports. It includes a MUGA pitch, a basketball court, a cycle proficiency area and a brand new trim trail.
Councillor Moody was very impressed. He said, “There really is something to interest every child in this new playground with a variety of sports areas, a climbing tree and cycling area. Another feature is the ‘mile a day’ route which is marked out around the playground, allowing the pupils to take part in a daily physical activity. It is a fantastic addition to a great school.”
Headteacher Charlotte Grogan added, “Both the staff and pupils are absolutely delighted with our outdoor space, it complements our wonderful school building and offers the children outdoor learning opportunities which support the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence. We are looking forward to making good use of all it has to offer!”
Hub West Scotland, the Council's development partner, led and managed the design and construction of the project with their supply chain partners including Holmes Miller Architects and Morgan Sindall construction.
