The Auld Kirk Museum has a host of events for all the family running over the Easter school break.

Starting on 3 April there will be a series of free drop-in arts and crafts workshops taking place.

All the workshops will have a First World War theme to tie in with the ‘Good-bye to all that: a last look at the Great War’ exhibition, which is currently running at the museum to mark the conclusion of centenary commemorations remembering the 1914 – 1918 conflict.

The workshops include:

  • Thaumatrope Soldier on 3 April (10am-1pm and 2-4pm)
  • Poppy making on 5 April (10am-1pm and 2-4pm)
  • Silk postcard making on 10 April (10am-1pm and 2-4pm)
  • Bunting workshop on 12 April (10am-1pm and 2-4pm)
  • Ration book and stamping on 14 April (12-4pm)
  • Writing and poetry on 14 April (12-4pm)

Please note, all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Visitors young and old can also enjoy a First World War concert tea party on Saturday 7 April between 12-4pm.

Sit back and enjoy some tea and cake while singer Ciadhra performs songs from the era and John Devlin recites some poems. Tickets for the concert cost £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children and can be bought in advance from the museum.

The ‘Goodbye to all that’ exhibition, which features original First World War posters and military memorabilia, will be brought to a spectacular end with a free closing event on Saturday 14 April between 12-4pm.

Re-enactment groups The Royal Engineers 1914-18 and The German Pioneers will take you back to the time of the Great War on their final call of duty. There will also be free drop-in workshops, held throughout the day, where our artists and writer will help you get creative and make your own First World War souvenir to take home.

Visitors will also get the chance to try on uniforms as well as handle military equipment from the period.

Sandy Marshall, Chair of EDLC Trust, added, "This year marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and over the past four years we’ve been commemorating the conflict and reflecting on the devastating impact it had on communities.

“Our exhibition has been really popular with residents and visitors alike and these events and workshops will help bring this period of history to life in a really interesting way for all the family.

"I would urge everyone to come along and join us at one of the events and take the chance to see this wonderful exhibition before it’s gone."

The museum, located on Cowgate in Kirkintilloch, is open every week - Tuesday to Saturday - from 10am-1pm and 2-5pm. For more information call 0141 777 3013.
