There was some first rate swimming on display at the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs recently when more than 90 local youngsters took part in time trials for the Scottish Schools’ Swimming Championships.

Swimmers, from 23 primary and secondary schools across the area, took part in local heats and by the end of all races a massive 122 qualifying times had been racked up.

Times will be submitted to the Scottish Schools’ Swimming Association to be compared with results from across the country and hopes are high that some local swimmer will have made the cut.

The Championships, sponsored by Brodies LLP, will be held at the Dolan Aqua Centre in East Kilbride in January 2017.

Councillor Anne Jarvis, Chair of the East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust, said, “Every year interest in swimming grows which is in part down to the success that Scottish swimmers like Michael Jamieson, who trained at The Leisuredrome, are enjoying on a global stage.

“I’m sure young people are inspired by that but also by their peers who have performed brilliantly at these championships. Last year, East Dunbartonshire took home a total of nine Gold and four Silver medals.

“This year’s time trials brought out the very best in our young swimmers so well done to them, their coaches and everyone who supports them in their training. It is wonderful that so many pupils are taking part in sport, keeping fit and having fun.”

The EDLC Trust would like to thank Milngavie & Bearsden Swimming Club, City of Glasgow Swim Team, Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth Swim Team and Scotia Swim Team for their help in running the event. They provided volunteers to time and referee the heats.
