There was a focus on literacy from East Dunbartonshire's education service at the recent Scottish Learning Festival in the SEC, Glasgow.

The festival, organised by Education Scotland, is the biggest professional learning event for Scottish teachers which aims to inspire, innovate and inform great educational practice.

Four of the Council's teachers and Improvement Officers led a seminar at the event to share best practice and explain current approaches to teaching reading and writing in Primary Schools.

They shared the Council's approach to 'practitioner enquiry' which is a 'study, plan, do and review' approach to enhancing practice. They also spoke about the Council's Literacy Champion Programme which is designed to support schools to raise attainment in literacy.

The presenters were:

  • Yasmin Ashby, Quality Improvement Officer
  • Grace McGill, Headteacher of Holy Trinity Primary, Kirkintilloch
  • Maria McAllister, Acting Depute Headteacher of Thomas Muir Primary, Bishopbriggs
  • Michaela Dickson, Class Teacher at Wester Cleddens Primary, Bishopbriggs.

Councillor Jim Goodall, Convener of the Council's Education Service said, "The Festival was an opportunity to showcase the great work that is going on in our schools.

"By sharing our positive experiences of what works best to help children reach their potential, we are helping to drive up standards within East Dunbartonshire and beyond. We remain committed to closing the attainment gap and events like this give education practitioners a chance to learn from each other."
