Consumer-savvy fifth and sixth year pupils from Douglas Academy have scooped the East Dunbartonshire Young Consumers of the Year title for the second year in a row, following a quiz held by the Council’s Trading Standards Team.

The knowledgeable team beat St Ninian's High School in Kirkintilloch and Kirkintilloch High School in a tight contest and are now busy preparing for the Scottish Finals which are being held in The Scottish Parliament in March 2017.

The team members were:

  • Melissa Bell (captain)
  • Scott Chalmers
  • Chloe Fleming (reserve)
  • Hope Irvine
  • Advaith Sastry

The Young Consumer competition, which is run annually across the UK by Trading Standards teams in local authorities, is designed to help senior students understand their rights and responsibilities and learn important life skills to help them become effective consumers and responsible citizens.

Quiz questions covered topics such as money & finance, food, health & wellbeing, safety & the environment and consumer affairs.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie watched the quiz and presented the prizes. She said, “Once again this event was an eye-opener for us in the audience. The knowledge displayed by pupils from all three schools was very impressive. Credit to all of them for working so hard to prepare for the quiz and thanks to the teachers who supported their participation.

“The quiz was held during National Consumer Week when there is a push to make sure we all know our rights as consumers. It is wonderful that so many schools got involved as this helps ensure that the next generation is clued up on important consumer issues.

“Douglas Academy pupils will be working closely over the next few months with officers from our Trading Standards Team to prepare for the final and I wish them good luck!”

Teacher Margaret McDaid from Douglas Academy added, "It’s great news that the pupils managed to retain this title for the school. The young people who take part in the quiz get so much out of it and learn some valuable life lessons. We will step up our efforts for the Scottish Final now and do our best to repeat our winning ways on a national stage.”
