A popular scheme offering people of all ages a free session at local leisure centre pools - provided they use pedal power to get there - is back to make a splash in 2020.employees beside swimming pool

Cycle for a Swim aims to inspire residents to get out and about, and also to access the first-class facilities available locally.

If you cycle to the Allander Leisure Centre in Bearsden, the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs or Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre between 1 February and 31 March 2020 then you are eligible for a free dip in the pool.

The initiative proved popular in February/March 2019 when a total of 618 free swims were claimed by pedalling patrons.

The campaign ran again in September/October 2019 and the uptake almost doubled, with an incredible 1,133 free swims claimed.

To secure your free swimming session just cycle to one of the three local centres, take a selfie on your bike outside and then show it at reception.*

The Council-run scheme, supported by East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust, is funded by the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme - aimed at edlc posterencouraging active travel.

Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said, "I am delighted that Cycle for a Swim is returning in February and March 2020 - building on the success of previous campaigns and encouraging people to stay active for health and wellbeing.

"The phenomenal figures from September/October show how popular the initiative has become - with the number of free swims almost doubling compared to earlier in 2019.

"Cycle for a Swim is just one of the ways the Council encourages people to cycle, walk and use public transport - tying in with our Active Travel Strategy 2015-2020."

People are also being invited to try out active travel routes in East Dunbartonshire.
