East Dunbartonshire Council has carried out a successful pilot of mould eradication in its properties and will now roll out the service on a case by case basis for people with health issues.

The comprehensive service sees the Council taking a new proactive approach to tackling housing maintenance.

While the issue affects a relatively small number of tenancies, the Council is keen to ensure that tenants’ health is at the top of its priorities.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said, “Often, when a complaint of mould and damp is made, on inspection, the problem is found to be condensation.

“The new pilot involved a thorough process of mould and spore neutralisation to ensure that any mould is cleaned away.

“In some cases, air monitoring systems are used to analyse and trend the living style of occupants – ventilation systems are then installed to improve the internal air quality. Tenants were also advised on ways to improve air quality in their home.”

This month, following the successful pilot, the Council has engaged a company called Steri-Systems to continue to assess mould growth in a number of properties.

Mould caused by condensation can be relatively simple to remedy. In most cases, mould and moisture problems are caused by poor airflow and ventilation.

To prevent condensation becoming an issue, tenants are advised to ventilate rooms after cooking, showering and drying clothing.
