This weekend (Sat 4th & Sun 5th July), as the nation comes together to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the NHS, three major buildings across East Dunbartonshire will be lit up blue as a thank-you to NHS staff.

Kirkintilloch Community Hub/William Patrick Library, Milngavie Town Hall and Bearsden Community Hub will be lit in blue to demonstrate the Council’s support for the NHS heroes, including East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) employees who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

Councillor Andrew Polson, Joint Leader of the Council said, “East Dunbartonshire’s health and social care employees have risen to the unprecedented challenge posed by this pandemic, meeting the increased demands COVID-19 has presented whilst delivering the essential services they have always provided.  I would like to thank each and every one of them for their unwavering dedication during these challenging times.”

Councillor Polson continued, “The lighting up of East Dunbartonshire’s public buildings is a symbol of our gratitude to East Dunbartonshire HSCP and NHS workers throughout the country, for the resilience, care and compassion displayed throughout the pandemic.”

On Saturday, people are being encouraged to place a light in the window of their homes in remembrance of all those who died during the pandemic. Then on Sunday, a nationwide clap is planned for 5pm as a tribute to NHS workers.

Joint Council Leader, Vaughan Moody, added, "It is right that we come together once again on Sunday evening to show our heartfelt thanks for the NHS.  The 72nd anniversary of the service is the perfect time to make a public statement of support for the people who, over the decades and never more so than in recent times, have served their communities so heroically. East Dunbartonshire pays tribute to them and I am honoured that we are involved."
