Council to Fly Union Flag to Commemorate 75th Anniversary of VJ Day

Date:
Friday, 14 August, 2020

VJ dayThe Union Flag will fly at the Council’s Southbank Marina Headquarters this weekend to mark the 75th anniversary of VJ Day (VJ75) on Saturday 15 August 2020.

Provost Alan Brown feels it is important that we recognise this anniversary, saying, “On 15 August 1945 the announcement of Japan’s Surrender was made, effectively ending the Second World War.  The official surrender document was signed later on 2 September and whilst that date marks the official end of the war, VJ Day remains a significant moment in getting to that endpoint.

“Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that we are not holding any events or exhibitions for this 75th anniversary, it is an opportunity for us to once again remember the contributions of our armed forces during the Second World War and the efforts of all those civilians who supported the war efforts.

“A UK-wide two minute silence will also be held on Saturday 15 August at 11 am in recognition of the VJ75 commemorations, and I would encourage those of you who are able to, to join others in the UK in this silence, as we once again remember this important date.”
