Some of East Dunbartonshire’s best-known buildings are being lit up red to show support for the national charity, Show Racism the Red Card.

Milngavie Town Hall, Bearsden Community Hub, William Patrick Library and Mugdock Castle will temporarily turn red as part of the anti-racism initiative which takes place on Friday 4 October.

Council employees are also being invited to wear something red on the day to show their support for the campaign that promotes the message that there is no place for racism or discrimination in our society. Anyone supporting this ‘wear red day’ initiative can make a donation to Show Racism the Red Card by texting ‘Red@ to 70470 to donate £1*.

Show Racism the Red Card is the UK's largest anti-racism and discrimination charity and this awareness raising event has been running for the last five years. Iconic buildings across the country will be bathed in red lights to show support and raise awareness of racism in all its forms.

Joint Council Leader Andrew Polson said, "The Council is happy to lend its support to this worthwhile campaign to help stamp out the scourge of racism in our society. The campaign continues to gain momentum each year and we are happy that some of our best known buildings are now taking part."

Joint Council Leader Vaughan Moody added, “Historically many of our schools have been involved in this national initiative, which has been operating for five years now, and we are happy to continue to highlight this vital issue by sending this strong visual signal of support.”
