Council agrees extension to catchment area for Gaelic Medium Primary Education

From August 2018 the catchment area for Gaelic Medium Primary Education (GMPE) in East Dunbartonshire will be extended to cover the whole Council area.

Currently only children living within the Meadowburn Primary School catchment area in Bishopbriggs can enrol directly for the Gaelic Unit there.

The change follows an extensive consultation carried out by the Council over the last year with parents/carers, teachers, school staff, trades unions, partners and community councils.

In line with legislation, Education Scotland was provided with the consultation responses – which overwhelmingly supported the proposal - and invited to give their views. They also support the proposal which will be implemented taking account of their comments.

Convener of the Education Committee, Councillor Jim Goodall said, “We are grateful to everyone who took part in the consultation and to Education Scotland for their support in helping us to bring about this important change for Gaelic Medium Primary Education.

“The Council is committed to services in the Gaelic language, provision of Gaelic medium education and visibility of Gaelic language and culture. This is a significant step forward.”
