Community conference on Antonine Wall

Date:
Thursday, 23 August, 2018

To mark the 10th anniversary of the inscription of the Antonine Wall as a World Heritage Site, and to celebrate the ongoing involvement of local communities, the Antonine Wall Steering Group will be hosting a community conference on Saturday 29 September at Glenskirlie House and Castle, Banknock, near Falkirk.

In the morning, a range of both academic and community speakers will discuss projects along the Antonine Wall, its history and archaeology. In the afternoon, there will be optional guided trips with experts to see sites on the Wall (with transport provided if required) or further workshop sessions at the Glenskirlie. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and the event is free to attend.

Registration is from 9.15am, with the conference starting at 10am. Optional tours and afternoon workshops will finish at 5pm. The conference is free to attend, however booking is required.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, is encouraging people to get involved.

He said, “This promises to be an excellent event to mark a significant milestone for the Antonine Wall, which plays an important part in the local history of the area. The Council is delighted to support the 10th anniversary celebrations as it is vital that we continue to keep our local heritage alive for this and future generations.”

The conference is part-funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund through the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project, led by West Dunbartonshire Council and funded by West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow City, East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and Falkirk Councils and Historic Environment Scotland.
