Hundreds of children and local residents
enjoyed a fantastic day of cycling, sports, skills and thrills in
Bishopbriggs on Sunday, 15 June.
ED's Cycle Co-op held a superb Commonwealth
Cycle Fair in Etive Park - supported by East Dunbartonshire Council
- with more than 500 children taking part in a variety of
activities during the day.
The fair was opened by East Dunbartonshire's
Provost Una Walker, who welcomed everyone to the event.
Commonwealth sprint cyclist Jenny Davis helped
to bring some of the magic of the Glasgow 2014 games to
Bishopbriggs.
Jenny, three-times British Team sprint silver
medallist, supported young riders with tips on race nutrition and
the mental strength required as an athlete, as well as helping
little ones have great fun participating in cycling activities.
Jenny spoke to youngsters and awarded all the
first, second and third-place medal winners with their prizes,
sponsored by Buff and MuleBar.
ED's Cycle Co-op has paid tribute to East
Dunbartonshire Council, Good Moves Bishopbriggs, Buff and a host of
other sponsors whose support ensured the event was again free for
all those attending.
Councillor Alan Moir, East Dunbartonshire's
Convener of Development and Regeneration, said, "We were delighted
to again support the Cycle Fair and hope it continues to go from
strength to strength.
"Well done to everyone at ED's Cycle Co-op for
another successful cycle promotion event.
"I'm sure all the youngsters who attended
enjoyed their day and hopefully will be inspired to keep
cycling.
"Promoting cycling and sustainable transport -
as well as increasing physical activity, improving health and
access to sport - is a priority for the Council and officers were
there on the day to chat with visitors about other travel
activities."
Highlights included cycle stunts shows, skills
course, races, a smoothie bike, live music, sports tasters and
Fairtrade stalls.
Organiser Mark Kiehlmann said, "It was an
honour for ED's Cycle Co-op to have the support of a former and
current Commonwealth athlete, who has many demands on her time
right now.
"Jenny is an inspirational athlete and we are
certain it will galvanise our current riders and help encourage
more local residents, young and old - especially girls - to get
back on their bikes for their own health, a more cohesive community
and better environment for all."
Jenny said, "The enthusiasm of Mark and the
whole ED's Cycle Co-op team is infectious and their achievements
are remarkable for a community-based organisation."
