Brush with success for active Bishopbriggs pupils

Talented youngsters got to the art of Bishopbriggs Relief Road when they came up with branding for East Dunbartonshire's newest active travel route.

Phase 4 of the road is currently under construction and the exciting project includes plans for a new walking/cycling route.

East Dunbartonshire Council recently called on primary school pupils in Bishopbriggs to create designs and suggest a name for the new route.

The winners have now been chosen and the new route will be called … Wester Way!

Two designs have also been chosen to adorn gateway signs at the new pedestrian/cycle route on Westerhill Road.

The winners - chosen from nearly 600 entries - were:

  • Abi Lee - P7 - St Helen's Primary (design)
  • Lauren Smith - P7 - Meadowburn Primary (design)
  • Miriam Cody - P4 - Woodhill Primary (name).

Each of the winners will see their suggestions immortalised when the new route opens this summer. They will also receive a bike each - courtesy of Morrison Construction, the contractor working on phase 4 of the relief road.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said, "Well done to all the winners and many thanks to everyone who entered. It was a fantastic response and the quality of the entries was incredibly high.

"It was a tough task to whittle down the many brilliant drawings and name suggestions.

"Both Abi and Lauren will have their images turned into gateway signs which will be installed at the entrance points to the dedicated pedestrian/cycle route on Westerhill Road.

"The re-designated route will be named Wester Way, which was Miriam's suggestion.

"I hope all three girls have happy times on their new bikes and get a chance to try out Wester Way for themselves later this year."
