Thousands of young readers in East Dunbartonshire have signed up for this year’s summer reading challenge - so much so that we have started to run out of sign-up materials at some of our libraries.

Extra supplies are on order, so if your child is keen to sign up and hasn’t yet done so we should have membership wallets and collector cards back in stock soon.

The annual national reading challenge runs until 20 August and kids of all ages can register at their local library.  The year’s theme celebrates the world’s favourite storyteller, Roald Dahl  and participants receive a Big Friendly Read membership wallet and can collect limited edition Quentin Blake collectors’ cards every time they read a book (there are six to collect).

Chair of the EDLC Trust, Councillor Anne Jarvis is delighted that the challenge has been so popular.  She said, “We have bought a lot of lovely new books for the Big Friendly Read and we have also invested in linked activities such as Zoolab and George’s Marvellous Medicine workshops.  It has been very well received - Roald Dahl’s work remains a firm favourite with yet another generation of young people!”

She continued, “Feedback from families suggests that it because of our love for Roald Dahl’s stories that the interest for the Big Friendly Read has been greater than usual and it is wonderful that more and more children are taking part.  Anyone interested in signing up can still do so – they can get started on the reading challenge and will receive their ‘collector’s wallet’ at the library once the extra materials arrive. The merchandise will be limited, however, so please sign up soon to avoid disappointment!”
