Staff and pupils of Bearsden Academy are celebrating having been given the title of Scotland’s State school of the Year in the prestigious Sunday Times School Guide.

The high achieving Bearsden school is no stranger to such accolades having received the same honour in 2011.

A number of factors are considered by the panel compiling the Guide including the quality of examination results, the depth and breadth of pupil experiences and in this instance, the recent Education Scotland report.

They cited, ‘A combination of supportive parents, dedicated staff and ambitious pupils’ as having contributed to the Academy’s success.

Substantive Headteacher, George Cooper said, “It is gratifying to receive such an award.  Winning it twice in a short period reinforces the positive view of the school as described by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate.

“Most importantly, our pupils, parents and staff know we have a strong, vibrant and highly-achieving school community. Our job is to continue to ensure success for all of our young people. Well done to all for their sterling efforts.”

Convener of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Education Committee, Councillor Maureen Henry, added, “What a wonderful achievement for a brilliant school with an already excellent reputation.

“To have this honour once is remarkable but to do so twice is truly outstanding. It demonstrates the positive partnerships that exist between pupils, school staff, parents and carers and the education authority. Congratulations to the whole school community.”
