A host of new benefits and opportunities will be available to pupils and teachers of Bearsden Academy now that the school has been welcomed onto the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) School Ambassador Programme.

At an inauguration event at the school SCQF Consultant, Brian Keegan, presented Head Teacher, George Cooper, with the school ambassador plaque and welcomed the school to the Programme.

The SCQF is Scotland’s national qualifications framework which supports lifelong learning of people of all ages. It also assists employers, learners and the general public to understand the full range of Scottish qualifications, how they relate to each other and how different types of qualification can contribute to improving the skills of the workforce.

One of the ways in which this work is carried out in the community is through the SCQF School Ambassador Programme. This Programme will bring many benefits to pupils and teachers at Bearsden Academy including supported flexible learning pathways, creating a greater understanding of the different learning programmes that are on the Framework and how these can be compared against standard academic qualifications.

Brian Keegan explained some of the other benefits for the school. He said, “The staff and pupils will gain:

  • A better awareness of how to use the Framework for pupils to plan their learning journey and make decisions about future learning
  • Opportunities to participate in real life projects such as developing web pages and toolkits for the SCQF website and designing promotional materials
  • A set of dedicated resources including lesson plans, case studies, presentations and associated materials to allow ambassadors to deliver in-house events.”

Vice-Convener of the Council’s Education Committee, Councillor Manjinder Shergill, attended the inauguration event at the school and thinks the Programme will be of benefit both to the school and the wider community.

He said, “Once pupils begin to explore the opportunities the SCQF offers, they will start sharing their experiences with friends and family until more and more people within the community gain a better understanding of the flexible learning pathways available to them.

“The SCQF Ambassador Programme is a great opportunity for the school and I am sure it will bring many benefits to Bearsden Academy in the coming year.”

Head Teacher George Cooper added, "Bearsden Academy's newly-acquired status as an SCQF Ambassador School is something we are taking very seriously.  Our next step is to promote wider pupil and parental engagement with the framework.  The aim is to provide yet more opportunities for our young people in order that they may succeed both now and in the future."
