men dressed in Roman costumesHave you ever wondered what Kirkintilloch was like in Roman times? Or how Celts living in Lenzie spent their days? Come along to the Rampaging Romans and Crafty Celts event at the Auld Kirk Museum on Sunday August 26 and experience a day in the life of the Romans and Celts of Kirkintilloch.

The event, part of the Kirkintiloch Canal Festival, will feature a host of fun activities for all the family.

The Antonine Guard will be on duty and giving demonstrations of their marching and will bring along their ‘horse’ for the children. They will also be describing what it would be like to be living in Caerpentalloch, the Roman name for Kirkintilloch in the 1st Century AD which translates as “Fort at the Head of the Ridge”.

The Celts will be setting up their camp and giving demonstrations of their basket weaving skills. Everyone will get a chance to get creative and make their own small craft work to be taken home.

Staff at the Auld Kirk Museum will also be on hand with their Roman Handling Collection and Dressing-Up Boxes.  Children will have the opportunity to dress in replica Roman costume and have their photographs taken with the Roman and Celt re-enactors.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of the Council’s Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said, “With so many sites of historical significance on our doorstep, such as the Antonine Wall and Mugdock Castle, East Dunbartonshire has a strong sense of history. This is great fun event to introduce the history of the area to children in an enjoyable and memorable way, and it’s free of charge.

"The Kirkintilloch Canal Festival is a chance for East Dunbartonshire to welcome visitors from all over Scotland and beyond – boosting the economy and showcasing our local facilities and attractions.”

The event is just one of many taking place on Gala Sunday, the final day of the week-long Kirkintilloch Canal Festival.

This year, once again, Gala Sunday has been designated as entirely smoke-free, in association with East Dunbartonshire Tobacco Alliance. This is in addition to the designated smoke-free areas around the festival site throughout the week.
