WWF’s Earth Hour 2019 takes place on Saturday 30 March - from 8.30pm-9.30pm – and the Council is once again taking part:

  • The Earth Hour Panda - a small cuddly toy which symbolises the natural world under threat from climate change - is making its way across East Dunbartonshire's primary, secondary and ASN schools, aiming to star in as many Twitter selfies as possible
  • The floodlights at William Patrick Library in Kirkintilloch will be switched off on Saturday 30 March - from 8.30pm-9.30pm.

The Council is firmly behind Earth Hour and is encouraging employees and members of the public to get involved.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said, "Earth Hour highlights and builds on the work we do throughout the year in East Dunbartonshire to respond to the threat of climate change.

"Recently, this has included expansion of the Council's electric pool car fleet and investigation of air-source heat pumps.

"As well as limiting future carbon emissions, we must also adapt to the effects which past emissions are having on our climate, including extreme weather events.

"Climate change is contributing to an increased risk of flooding and river restoration is an important way of protecting communities.

"Major projects are currently being developed for the Glazert Water. In addition, the feasibility of river restoration projects is being investigated for a further three water bodies in East Dunbartonshire."

Everyone is invited to join WWF’s Earth Hour on Saturday 30 March at 8.30pm. For more information and to sign up visit www.wwfscotland.org.uk/earthhour and search for #EarthHourScotland on social media.
