Adult Befriending Project

The Befriending Project for adults provides a valuable support service for older, disabled, housebound and isolated people living in East Dunbartonshire.

Referrals are received from social work and health practitioners, GPs, and voluntary sector care workers.

What is befriending?

A befriender is a volunteer who spends time each week with a vulnerable, socially isolated adult on a one-to-one basis. By providing companionship either in the person's own home or out and about in the local community (for example, going out to a cafe, the cinema or a walk in the park).  Befrienders can also keep in touch with people via email or telephone.

Volunteers can make a real difference to an individual's life.

The Adult Befriending Service does not operate a traditional waiting list, the emphasis is placed on finding a suitable and successful match with a trained volunteer.  This is based on information about circumstances, availability and a range of other factors.
