Introduction
In accordance with our commitment to the Gaelic (Scotland) Act 2005 we embarked on consultation and engagement for our draft Gaelic Language plan 2024-2029, The consultation took place between 6 November 2023 until 17 December 2023. We embarked on a comprehensive consultation process to review and produce Gaelic Language Plan 2023-28.
Guided by the ethos of “We asked, you said, we did”, our goal was to actively listen to the suggestions, comments and ideas of the community, ensuring the voices are at the heart of developing an effective, meaningful and measurable plan. This report outlines the key findings and proposed actions derived from our extensive consultation efforts.

We asked for your views on our draft Gaelic Language Plan 2023-28, to help develop Gaelic in our community amongst all age groups with a strong focus on Gaelic Medium Education (GME)
You said
We received two hundred and fifty-three online survey responses. In addition, 68 individuals participated in our four focus group sessions, including community, third sector and organisations representing equality groups. Local schools were involved as were youth clubs and neuro diverse groups. Participants included people from ethnic minority groups as well as support groups for mental health and wellbeing.
One hundred and eighty respondents advised they did not speak Gaelic, whilst one hundred and forty-one advised they did. One hundred and ninety-one participants were male, whilst one hundred and twenty-six were female, with four people preferring not to answer.
Age bracket was well represented with fifty-two under 16s responding, forty-five 16–25-year-olds, thirty-seven 25–34-year-old, fifty-two 35–44-year-olds, forty-two 45–54-year-olds, thirty-nine 55–64-year-olds and fifty-four 65+ year olds responding.
Engagement spanning various geographic communities; Bishopbriggs ninety respondents, sixty-five from Bearsden, forty-three from Kirkintilloch, twenty-seven from Lenzie, twenty-six from Milingavie, nineteen from Auchinairn,fifteen from Milton of Campsie, twelve from Lennoxtown, five from Torrance, three from Twecher and sixteen from other areas in East Dunbartonshire.
Most respondents (221 out of 321) advised they agreed with the broad and inclusive approach that the council were taking with regards to the Gaelic Language Plan, this was 69% overall.
The majority of respondents expressed that they agreed with the aim to support Gaelic in having a stronger appeal to individuals and families (221 out of 321 agreed with this approach).
We did
We do not consider that the public consultation has suggested any requirement for a fundamental change to the proposed plan. Therefore, the existing plan is sufficiently flexible to consider many of the points raised by respondents.
We will continue to take on board the feedback we have received in this consultation to improve the accessibility of our services in the future. We will continue to work hard to ensure language is not a barrier for anyone who needs us. Alongside this work, we will continue to support the Gaelic language, so that it is visible and audible throughout our organisation and within the diverse communities we serve.

Survey Information
The Council has produced its third draft Gaelic Language Plan – aiming to increase the use of the language – and residents are being encouraged to comment on it.
The Council is required to publish a Gaelic Language Plan under the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005. We have had plans in place since 2013 and our next is due to cover the period 2023-28.
An online consultation launched today (Monday 6 November) and anyone who would like to read the draft plan and have their say on it by completing a short online survey, can do so until Sunday 17 December.

This is an opportunity to provide your knowledge, views and expertise in order to help shape our plan to help to safeguard and promote Gaelic language and culture.
We believe that the Gaelic language has an important role to play in promoting diversity and inclusion, and we are committed to working with Gaelic-speaking communities and individuals to help support the language and ensure it continues to thrive in East Dunbartonshire.
