Community Champion Awards 2023 - Paul Bishop

Provost Gillian Renwick and Depute Provost Colette McDiarmid with Geraldine, who accepted the Award on Paul's behalfThe Arts & Heritage Champion at this year’s Provost Community Champion Awards is the late Paul Bishop.

Paul Bishop was a resident of Baldernock and a Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Glasgow. Paul and fellow-resident, Professor Niall Logan, began the Baldernock Local History Group. This brought the community together for talks and local walks. Paul and Niall also became involved in the wider Scottish and UK local history movement, giving talks and organising heritage exhibitions. Paul was instrumental in local archaeological work and collaborated on a local arts/environmental project with artist Rachel Mimiec. Paul researched the history of the Dougalston Estate as well as its natural environment. He loved Baldernock, having moved there from Australia in 1998. He died in 2022 after a short illness.
