Residents are being offered a further opportunity to have their say on a new river restoration project planned for the Glazert Water.

This online engagement event is part of the planning process for the Glazert Restoration Project.

The project is the result of a study commissioned by Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Scottish Government to restore natural waterways.

A Proposal Of Application (POA) [opens in a new window] for the project has now been submitted to the Council’s Planning Department.

The intention of this consultation engagement is not only to meet planning application requirements but also to provide an update on the project and offer people a further opportunity to feedback on the project objectives and proposed restoration options. The Council is working in collaboration with SEPA on this exciting project which aims to physically restore the Glazert watercourse, enhance the water quality and revitalise the wildlife corridor serving the communities of north Kirkintilloch, Milton of Campsie, Lennoxtown, Clachan of Campsie and Haughhead. It is also hoped it will provide flood risk benefits to the River Kelvin and reduce the likelihood of flooding to communities in Kirkintilloch and Torrance.

The Council appointed partners cbec eco-engineering (cbec), who specialise in river restoration to undertake the work. Having started work on the design phase of the project in September 2019, initial designs have now been developed for the site.An online engagement event was held in March 2020 to let people know more about the project, share the proposed restoration options and initial designs and to get people's feedback, comments and suggestions on opportunities to improve the amenity and recreational value of the area along the river as well as how links between the town of Lennoxtown and the River Glazert could be improved

There was a really positive response to the engagement with over 40 people providing feedback and comments. Many of the respondents asked to be kept informed and involved with project and the value of the river to the local community was acknowledged by the majority of respondents. Feedback and input from the event was used to inform development of the restoration options and designs and identify opportunities to improve amenity and recreation along the river.

Before proceeding to the detailed design phase of the project, further investigations are now taking place to determine the chemical composition and general nature of the existing ground conditions in the relevant areas of the restoration site to ensure a full understanding of ground conditions to help with project decision making for the design. Once the results of the ground investigations are available then the restoration options can be finalised and the project can proceed to the detailed design phase.

As part of this online engagement posters used at the community consultation event in March 2019 have been made available for participants. These posters provide an introduction and background to the project as well as presenting the proposed restoration options and preliminary design drawings.

Residents can view the proposals and provide any feedback [opens in a new window] or on the online planning application reference TP/ED/20/0664.
