East Dunbartonshire Council is one of seven local
authorities in Scotland chosen to take part in the Scottish
Government Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Initiative. Funding has
been provided for two years to set a 'Healthy Habits' programme in
Kirkintilloch and Lenzie.
The programme will promote the benefits of sustainable travel to
enhance the health and economy of the local community and to make
sure that Kirkintilloch and Lenzie continue to be great places in
which to live, work, shop and enjoy.
We launched the project on Saturday 30 May 2009 by holding a Fun
Day in the Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre and we opened our Healthy
Habits Information Centre at 55 Cowgate on Thursday 2 July
2009.
Some of the activities and events over the last year
include:
- attending the Lenzie and Kirkintilloch Gala days
- the Kirkintilloch Canal Festival
- organising a family bike ride
- launching Healthy Habits Cycle Club
- hosting active travel and road safety workshops for pre &
primary schoolchildren
- publishing a local routewise map
- erecting walking/cycling route signs around the community
Monthly information sessions were held in William Patrick
Library, the Regents Centre in Kirkintilloch, Hillhead Community
Centre and Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre to allow local
residents to chat with the team and pick up some useful
resources.
