EDLC libraries offer digital sessions

William Patrick LibraryThe Libraries team at East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (ELDC) Trust hosted a range of digital learning sessions to help residents.

Aimed at those who needed a helping hand with computers, support on how to fully access information on a smartphone, or even shown how to use an eReader, the events were specially designed to be useful to people with various abilities.

Held at Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch and Milngavie libraries, the popular events helped all ages navigate the internet and learn more about the range of digital options available in East Dunbartonshire libraries.

EDLC Libraries offer members a range of services that can be accessed from their own device at any time, such as the online catalogue, access to eBooks, Audiobooks, digital magazines, and comics, and Pressreader, an all-you-can-read digital newsstand, offering unlimited access to over 7,000 newspapers and magazines from around the world.

The sessions, which were a mix of drop-ins and one-to-one support, focused on a list of skills including:

  • Smartphones, tablets & eReaders
  • Accessing the internet
  • Setting up an email address
  • Using digital library services
  • Making video calls

Remote digital support was also available over the phone for residents who couldn’t make it along to a library.

Jim Neill, Chair of EDLC Trust, said, "Our digital learning sessions made a welcome return in 2022. These events were designed to help people of all ages and abilities to unlock the online world and make the most of modern devices.

“It’s vital for inclusion that no one is left behind as technology and services continue to evolve and develop in exciting ways.

“We all experienced first hand how important being able to access and understand the digital world was during lockdown. Being able to communicate, learn, work, and socialise online played a key role in us getting through lockdown and we know that as technology continues to move forward so must we be able to use it to the best of our ability in order to suit our needs.”
