This year is the 800th Anniversary of Kirkintilloch
becoming a Barony Burgh. A Royal Charter was signed in October 1211
and to commemorate the anniversary of this historical event a
series of festivities are being planned throughout the town.
Council Leader and local Councillor Rhondda Geekie is delighted
that plans are developing to mark this significant occasion. She
said, “There is much to be proud of in Kirkintilloch and it is
right that we recognise the 800th anniversary of the creation of
the Burgh. We are planning an exciting number of commemorative
activities around the town over the coming months also working
together with other organisations in Kirkintilloch. Already we have
a comprehensive programme of events which we are adding to
daily.”
Throughout the year there will be many activities which will
include a Kirkintilloch Showcase event on 30 April, the Gala Week
in June, Canal Festival in August and events around the actual
anniversary of the signing of the Burgh Charter in early October.
These will be aimed at engaging with local communities, encouraging
civic pride, stimulating the local economy through tourism,
enhancing profile of Kirkintilloch.
Councillor Geekie added, “We are still in the planning stages
and once the programme is finalised we’d really like everyone in
Kirkintilloch to join in the Kirkintilloch 800 celebrations.
Throughout the coming months there should be something for everyone
to get involved and enjoy in recognition of this anniversary.”
